Variable geometry turbocharger

Error identification:

The variable geometry turbocharger nozzle ring has an operating range that is less than expected.


Cause:

The reduced motion of the nozzle ring can be due to deposits in the variable geometry turbocharger or damage to the guide vanes.


Notes:

Can affect engine performance and gear change quality.

The engine control unit switches off the EGR circuit. May lead to a reduction in the engine power and the warning lamp lighting.

In certain applications it is not possible to clear the fault code if it is active.


Action:

Check the mechanical parts of the variable geometry turbocharger using the Condition test for a variable geometry turbocharger in SDP3.

If the results of the condition test were not acceptable, the variable geometry turbocharger is damaged and must be renewed. Plan the renewal with the customer.

If the condition test was approved, further investigation is required:

• Read off the relevant individual calibration using Reading calibration values for a variable geometry turbocharger in SDP3 and save the values.

• Remove the electric motor for the variable geometry turbocharger. Check that the gear segment arm can be easily moved by hand between its end positions.

If the gear segment arm cannot move freely: renew the variable geometry turbocharger.

If the gear segment arm can move freely: Also check that the output shaft of the electric motor has not separated. If a fault in the electric motor has been detected, renew the electric motor.

Refit the electric motor for the variable geometry turbocharger and reinstall it using SDP3.

Check that the individual calibration range is the same as before. Then perform Condition test for a variable geometry turbocharger in SDP3.

If the installation fails or the condition test is still not approved, renew the variable geometry turbocharger s electric motor.

If the operating time since the fault code was generated exceeds 10 hours, drain the EGR cooler as there is a risk that condensed water has formed in the air-cooled EGR cooler when the EGR system was switched off. Drain according to the instructions in Workshop Manual, sub-group 01-65.
