The engine control unit has detected that the mechanism is not moving as it should, which means that the correct charge air pressure is not reached.
Mechanical parts in the variable geometry turbocharger are binding. This may be due, for example, to deposits, ice forming or damage to the guide vanes.
The engine control unit switches off the engine management system and the engine power is reduced.
The fault code cannot be deleted when it is active.
The validation time for the fault code is 1 s, the verification period is 1 s.
Check the mechanical parts of the turbocharger using the condition test on variable geometry turbochargers in SDP3. Mechanical damage can already be detected at room temperature. Binding, due to mechanical tolerances or deposits, can be detected when the turbocharger has a high operating temperature. Therefore, it is important to also carry out the test on a hot turbocharger. A warm turbocharger has a temperature above 300°C (exhaust gases into the turbocharger can have a temperature of up to 600°C). Measure the temperature of the turbine housing using a non-contact infrared temperature gauge.
If the condition test result is a fail:
• Remove the actuator. Check that the gear segment arm can be easily moved by hand between its end positions.
If the gear segment arm can move freely: Refit the actuator. Reinstall the actuator using SDP3 and carry out a condition test on the variable geometry turbocharger.
• If the installation fails or the condition test is a fail, renew the actuator.
• If the condition test is approved, the actuator was probably incorrectly adapted. No parts need to be renewed.
If the gear segment arm cannot move freely: Renew the variable geometry turbocharger.
If the condition test is a pass on both a hot and cold turbocharger, the fault code is due to a temporary malfunction, for example ice forming when starting at low outdoor temperatures.
If the operating time since the fault code was generated exceeds 10 hours, drain the EGR cooler as there is a risk that condensed water will form in the air-cooled EGR cooler when the EGR circuit has been switched off. Drain according to the instructions in Workshop Manual, sub-group 01-65.
